Been doing a bit of riding since I have some time this summer. One of the local riding clubs has an organized ride or two during the week. I try to get out and ride as much as possible - I really enjoy riding.
But the past two rides have had their share of troubles. On July 25 a small group of about 13 bikes took off for a ride around a local Dam - one we have been to several times before and is a popular destination stop for bikers. We arrived, had lunch, and departed for trip around the reservoir. In a short curve one of our senior riders apparently hit a fissure near the side and it threw him off the side, down the shoulder and up the embankment. He was wearing a good set of riding gear; FF helmet, fiber jacket, gloves, thick riding pants, and boots. He good a bit of road rash on one arm, his right ankle turned out black and blue, and he will need a new jacket, but otherwise no injuries. His '07 Harley Super Glide will need some repairs.
Thirty minutes later, while following a huge group of Harley Touring bikes from the Dam, a rider on a sports bike heading toward the group swerved into the butt end of a guardrail. His bike didn't appear to be in too bad shape, but he didn't fare as well (see the video - link here or via the picture above).
There is something to be said for wearing the correct gear when riding.
Last, but not the least - yesterday, another senior rider and leader of our group kissed a guardrail with his boot while taking a short curve too wide on his sports bike. No young'un, this gentleman. Just rider error. No hurt other than scrapped boot and perhaps a bit of pride.
Let's be safe out there.
Enjoy Life.
