Ugly? Yes.
But is was mine and by the time I had finished - it wasn't . . .
A word of advice . . . don't go looking for old pictures of your car. It will only cause you to find old memories and spend hours reminiscing about things long since forgotten.
Since starting this blog, I thought it would be apropos to include something about my own and how I came to own it. While Big George was the one that started it for me - it was a little '55 that I passed almost daily that I knew I was destined to own. She belonged to an elderly man in the neighborhood. He seldom drove it - primarily to transport his lawn mower from odd job to odd job. As a kid I watched him go slowly by, the handles of the mower sticking out of the trunk of the Chevy. I stopped by his house several times to see if he wanted to sell, only to be re-bluffed each time. I promised him that if he ever wanted to sell it, I'd be there, money in hand.
Years went by and I forgot about that Chevy. Then one day I happened to drive by and see this old car with a hand painted "For Sale" sign on it. I slammed on my brakes so quick I almost was rear-ended. A quick u-turn and I was there.
"Hello, how much are you asking for the old Chevy?" I asked the old man that answered the door.
"It ain't for sale." he replied quickly.
"Buuu ...ttt" I stammered.
"I told ya' ... if you can't drive it, sell it! And it is for sale." I heard a woman's voice from the kitchen. She walks into the small living room and smiles at her husband. "He drove it into a fence post last week." she patted his arm gently. "It's really time for it to go. We're both too old to be driving that old car. He has a new one that doesn't take so much effort to drive."
She took his hand and squeezed lovingly, "Please dear. Just let it go. This man has been by here ever since he was a kid. I remember him. Sell it."
"Awwww - okay. I guess you're right. But I want $200 for it!" He looked me in the eye - with tears in his, said "Take good care of her..."
And so I bought it. One front fender was a bit crumpled but otherwise in good condition. I spent the next 10 years with that car.
I eventually sold it - and told the buyer to take good care of her...
